How To Boost Your Home Workout
How To Boost Your Home Workout
Some of my favorite workouts are the ones I can do at home with no fancy equipment. I love sneaking in a quick workout that requires little to no set up (which also means no clean up)! Also, closet space is so precious that I don’t want to have to store more than I need.
Luckily, there are so many ways to get creative and use what you already have around the house to boost your workout. These are my 4 absolute favorites—and I bet you’ve never heard of the last one!
A Step Stool
A step stool is a jack-of-all-trades! It can be used for cardio when used as a step—just be sure you place it on a surface where it will not slip, like a yoga mat. It can be used for strength training, as well. Use it for calf raises so that your heels drop below the top of the step stool, and you will feel double the burn that you would normally get from a typical calf raise on the floor. You can also hold the sides of the step stool in push up position to take your push-ups and planks to the next level. Another favorite of mine is to put one leg resting on the step stool as I do a one-legged squat. Your working leg will be on fire (in the best possible way)!
A Bottle of Water
No need for those light hand weights! Grab a bottle of water for each hand and go about your usual workout. They may seem small, but wow do they make a difference! Some things I love to do with water bottles are very tiny arm circles with my arms to the side, swan arms like a ballerina, and tricep pulses. But just holding them while you’re doing a cardio video is another great way to get a boost!
A Towel
A towel can be used in place of a yoga mat in a pinch. This is what I do when I travel. Just make sure it’s over carpet, because it’s way too slippery for hard surfaces and lacks the cushy factor of a real yoga or pilates mat.
But if you have a hard, smooth surface, you’re in luck because a towel can be transformed into the best workout companion. Have you ever tried Lagree or Pilates reformer classes? You can use a towel of any size to slip your way through those similar movements, like a sliding reverse lunge, and your body weight will create resistance just as your machine would on a reformer or megaformer. My favorite is putting the towel under my feet in plank position and pulling my knees under me.
Stretch Leggings
Nope, I don’t mean to wear, though leggings are definitely my go-to workout attire! Did you know your favorite stretchy leggings can be turned into a resistaband? Use them seated to do some rowers. Use them standing tied around your thighs for squats. Tuck them the top part under your feet and hold one leg in each hand to do some tricep curls. They’re also fantastic for deepening your stretches. The possibilities are endless. Just be sure you use high quality leggings with stretch and durability. Our Candy and Sam Mesh Panel leggings are the perfect blend of flexibility and durability for this. We don’t recommend using cotton leggings because they will become misshapen and stretched out.
